Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence was diagnosed with a sprained ankle in Monday night’s 34-31 overtime loss and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.
Head coach Doug Pederson did not have an update following the game and confirmed that Lawrence will undergo more testing on Monday and Tuesday.
NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported that Lawrence appeared to be able to stand on his ankle in the locker room following the loss, but was careful not to strain or walk. He shared information about the injury with his teammates, and a good number of them seemed to be in good spirits after talking to Wolff, after which Lawrence left the locker room in a walking boot.
Lawrence was injured with the game tied 28-28 with 5:25 left in the fourth quarter. He was stepped on by his offensive lineman, Walker Little, during the dropback and then bent backwards badly while on the ground.
The Jags QB tried to leave the field but fell back to the ground. He needed the help of two coaches to get back to the sideline and tunnel for evaluation.
Lawrence received the post in question and never returned.
He was 22 of 29 for 258 yards and two passing touchdowns, and a score on the ground in his departure.
Cincinnati’s field-goal drive was followed by senior backup C.J. Beathard entered the game in relief and led a three-point drive himself to help force overtime.
Beathard couldn’t take advantage of the extra frame. His Jaguars had to punt after a 26-yard drive stalled, after which the Bengals drove down Evan McPherson’s game-winning field goal.
“We’ll see where Trevor is at first,” Pederson said, when asked about the level of confidence in Beathard moving forward as the starter if needed. “But listen, we have 100 percent confidence in CJ, I mean, he went down there and tied the football game. It should have been the game-winning field goal, but it wasn’t. But there’s a lot of confidence in CJ. He’s a veteran player. He He’s played a lot of football and if he’s the guy, we’ll get behind him and support him.”
All eyes will now be on the results of Lawrence’s MRI, which could tell the story for the rest of Jacksonville’s season.
