Bill Belichick Commanders and Long Shot for Seahawks, NFL's 2 Remaining Head Coaching Vacancies: Sources

Former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick is seen as a long shot for the Washington Commanders and Seattle Seahawks coaching vacancies, league sources said, leaving open the possibility that the second-winningest coach in NFL history could be without a team in 2024.

The Atlanta Falcons, the only team to interview Belichick on Thursday, hired Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris.

According to league sources, it would take a change in direction to make anything happen with either the Commanders or the Seahawks. Six other head coaching vacancies have been filled this offseason.

Entering the 2023 season, it's more or less accepted that Belichick will be with the Patriots for as long as it takes to replace the late Dan Shula as the winningest coach in NFL history. But Belichick and New England both went 4-13. Belichick interviewed with the Falcons twice last week.

Counting the regular season and playoffs, Belichick has 333 coaching wins. He has 15 coaching victories over Shula, who won 347 games as coach of the Baltimore Colts and Miami Dolphins.

Time becomes Belichick's enemy as he continues the feat. He turned 72 on April 16.

If Belichick doesn't coach in any capacity in 2024, that would end a coaching staff's streak of 49 consecutive seasons in the NFL. He began his career as a “special assistant” with the Baltimore Colts in 1975 under head coach Ted Marchibrota.
