At least 10 people were injured in a shooting at a rooftop party in downtown Madison early Sunday morning. “It’s truly a miracle that no one died,” Madison Police Chief Shawn Barnes said during a morning news conference. The shooting happened around 12:45 a.m. at the Luxe high-rise apartment building on Johnson Street, not far from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Officers at the scene reported dozens of people screaming and running out of the complex. “They (officers) found some people in varying degrees of distress and some people hiding in maintenance closets trying to find safety,” Barnes said. People suffered gunshot wounds or were grazed, and one was injured by broken glass. Around 10 shell casings were recovered. The Madison Police Department said the victims were between the ages of 14 and 23. Some are high school students. Officials estimate hundreds of people were on the roof. The victims are expected to survive. At this time, they do not have a motive for the shooting, Barnes said. As of 4pm on Sunday, no arrests had been made. It was the second mass shooting in Madison in 48 hours. A man was shot and killed on Williamson Street. Barnes said 50 shell casings were found and several buildings were damaged. “At this time, as a community, our hearts ache,” Barnes said.
