Kervonta Davis stopped Ryan Garcia in the 7th round for a KO win
Gervonta Davis stopped Ryan Garcia with a precision body shot in the seventh round of their fight.
LAS VEGAS — Ryan Garcia pounced, then dropped to one knee, a shot to the liver from Kervonta “Tank” Davis, who landed Garcia for the second time in Saturday’s superfight, and this time, he didn’t. Not winning the count.
The referee reached the count of 10 at 1:44 of the 7th round in front of 20,842 at the sold-out T-Mobile Arena, a counterintuitive but decisive finish to the most anticipated bout in boxing in years.
“I couldn’t breathe,” said Garcia, 24. “I was going to get back up, but I couldn’t get up. … He caught me with a good shot — which I didn’t want to do. There are no excuses here — … and I couldn’t recover. … He caught me with a good body shot, snuck under me and caught me really well.”
With that single left hand, Davis cemented himself as one of boxing’s best pound-for-pound fighters, if not one of the sport’s biggest stars in a 136-pound catchweight fight that was preceded by months of trash talk and hype.
“I’m the face of boxing,” Davis said later.
