CAIRO – Namibian President Hage Zingob died on Sunday while undergoing medical treatment, his office announced.
On social media site X, formerly on Twitter, the Namibian president said Geingob's medical team at Lady Pohamba Hospital did what they could to help him, but Geingob died with his wife Monica Geingos and children.
Jeongob was undergoing treatment for cancer. The 82-year-old had a colonoscopy and gastroscopy on Jan. 8, followed by a biopsy, his office said last month.
Namibia's acting president, Angolo Mbumba, called for calm, saying in the same post that “cabinet will immediately come into force to make the necessary state arrangements in this regard”.
President of the South African country since 2015, Jeingop is set to complete his second and final term this year. In 2014, he claimed to have survived prostate cancer.
Namibia will hold elections in November to choose a new leader.
